Just an idea...

It's been a while since I've seen any cuastic challenges or contests or even collaborations, so I thought I'd throw this idea out there. Since there is such a range in skill level and styles here on the forum I thought it might be interesting, if we can all agree on a midi file, to see everyone's individual take on it in caustic. The only rule that I think should apply is that the notes and tempo should remain unchanged. Otherwise, whatever machine, preset, mixing, effects, automation, etc., would be up to the individual.

And if it turns out to be a popular idea, I might have a part2.

Go for it, I did more or less that with the marble machine thread but there really weren't many takers and it just kinda died on its arse... which I thought was a shame.

That's true. I forgot about

That's true. I forgot about that. I guess it's one of those things, that if people wanted to do a paticular song they would have done it already.

The hard part I think would be deciding on what song it should be, even though in the end it's not even really about the song.

Hi Uncle,

Hi Uncle,

So, in this case, you would supply a midi file?  Rob's idea, which I thought was great but it hit me at a bad time schedule-wise, supplied a .caustic file.

Well, I could.... I suppose

Well, I could.... I suppose it would make sense since it was my idea, but I was kinda quietly hoping it wouldn't come to that hehe. I didn't have anything in mind, but thought maybe it should be something that chances are most people have heard... maybe even overheard. Not necessarily something from this list: http://www.rocknrollamerica.net/Top1000.html , but in that category.

What I could do, if I decide, or we decide on a song, is import the midi and label all of the channels into empty modular presets, then post a caustic file and let people do the rest for themselves.

And keeping the original tempo and notes was only a suggestion. It wouldn't have to be a rule.

Maybe in honor of Tom Petty, one of his songs would work. I was also thinking Won't get fooled Again by The Who, or Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. Or there are some Rush songs that might be fun to try.

Maybe something country. We could make it all electronic. Besides, Rob loves cowbell.

Ok. Since we're making electronic music, I found a list that might be more suitable.

Is it wrong of me to be suspicious when I see ".ru" in the address?

Well, probably not wong to be

Well, probably not wong to be suspicious, but I can say that for the songs that I clicked on, it opens my midi player app and plays them just as expected. And downloading them seems to give you the file expected with no obvious weirdness. Kaspersky, mawarebytes, and Dr. WebLight all detect nothing...I'm guessing the .ru means it's a russian site?

Anyway, here it is copied and pasted...

I just went through most of the list... maybe disco isn't the best choice afterall hehe. There are 2 that I thought maybe just for the hell of it.... Jungle Boogie by Kool and The Gang and I'm Your Boogieman by KC and The Sunshine Band.

Ok. For those of you who couldn't wait any longer, here it is... the boogieman song... mainly to prove why it was a bad idea. It's just a straight import as you might have guessed, but I also patternized it just because. I was going to automate the wah on the guitars, but nah.

Here's a blank version with the notes in the piano roll if anyone wants to try. Maybe I'll use my patternized version and try making a metal version hehe.

Hey UncleAfx, didn't want you

Hey UncleAfx, didn't want you to think no one noticed.  I'm taking a crack at your patternized file but time is precious so it might be a bit before I'm done. I think I'm leaning in the same direction as you, taking a kind of prissy disco sound into a harder rock mode.

No that's fine. Thanks for having a look. But don't force yourself. This is why I kindof realised its not such a great idea...it would be pretty hard to find a song from any genre that would be "a hit". This is one of those threads I kindof wish I could go back and undo. I rubbed myself the wrong way with it hehe. But I went with a disco song partly because it seems so remixable. Maybe not the particular song I chose, but in general.

Haha! Cool. When I mentioned doing a metal version, I completely forgot Rob Zombie already did a version, but I'm sure that's what made me think of it. I have a few ideas myself, but I want to resist doing another exact copy like I already did. I'll give it a shot.

Here's what I did last night.

Here's what I did last night... not exactly metal, but, some metal sounds. The bass, vocals, and brass machines are all from mike's packs on google play. The drums are from a soundfont. Everything else came from various sources that I've forgotten. Anyway, other than new sounds, I dropped the tempo and made only a few minor changes to the arrangement.

Hey there, you took it to a whole different plane, really grungy and thick.  My version is attached and goes the other way, the tempo is up and energy level maxxed out.  I used almost all of your original instruments but every.single.one has been altered in its settings or FX.  Then I added a few more of my own. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting of getting the midi into a patterned file, I enjoyed messing with this a lot and if I can free up more SC space I may put it up there.

So, put on the phones and fasten your seatbelt because this is a rocketlauncher.

Ooh wow I like it! Not that I thought I wouldn't haha. Yeah yours definitely has more energy. I couldn't help myself with the grungy version. I like what you added though. The subsynth is a nice addition...

I'm not so good at putting different sounds in their own space in the mix, though I think I'm getting better. That's one thing I notice youre very good at.

And as far as the patternizing, it actually wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. I even thought about imorting Jungle Boogie into it and trying a mash-up. :)

Thanks! It was fun to do.

Thanks! It was fun to do. Enjoyed just working with the sound, instruments, FX, etc without having to compose the actual music. Thanks for having the idea.
