tips on using drum breaks in hip hop

OK so I love the sound of drum breaks in old school hip hop, but I suck at using drum breaks. I can recognize drum breaks other people use, but sometimes I can't exactly understand what they did to it. What really confuses me the most, is when people chop out each individual drum and make their own pattern, when I do that it just sounds weak. The hi hats and the kick are the worst. I understand how to find tempo and loop it and chop it into sections and rearrange it that way, and that usually sounds better but it still sounds off sometimes with some breaks. And I would imagine layering would probably fix a lot of my problems, and I do understand layering and how to make it sound somewhat right in trap, but my layering in hip hop is bogus. It sounds so different.

You can put a saturator

You can put a saturator distortion on your kits and sidechain a modular to the beatbox, and add a saturator to it as well, there is more than one way to skin a cat, this is just my method because i dont like limiters.

That does help me with some

That does help me with some questions I had about trap, but I was talking about like 90s sampled hip hop. Like I'll post some examples in a second

OK so I recognize the break from the second video as the drums in the first video, and it sounds like they just looped it for a good chunk of the song, but there's one part where they switched up the drums somehow and I can't really tell what they did to the break.

Alot of 90s hiphop just

Alot of 90s hiphop just sampled vinyl drums but used real kits as well id just play around with the samples in beatbox add reverb and distortion or compression, also sometimes people using pcmsynth for single drums all personal preference, but that might give you what you are looking for beatbox sometimes will choke out other drums.

Some small file. Contains the

Some small file. Contains the first video kick and snare break-beat patterns. First pattern was a test run, then I changed the BPM and made the other two patterns.

Ok so I went back to the lab

Ok so I went back to the lab and tried some of what you guys said. I think it sounds hip hop now. If anyone has any constructive criticism I posted a song file. I ran every single drum sound through saturate, but I'm not sure if throwing it on the snare and hat was necessarily the proper thing to do, but it sounds good to me so I left it in. It made a BIG difference with the bass tho.
